Emergency appointments
Ring the demo contact page before 10:00 on a weekday and you will almost always be seen the same day. Six slots are held open every morning for this.
Go to hospital, not us
Facial swelling that closes an eye or affects swallowing or breathing. Bleeding that has not stopped after twenty minutes of pressure. Trauma involving the jaw.
Same day
Severe toothache stopping you sleeping, swelling in the gum, a broken tooth with a sharp edge, or something knocked out.
Within the week
A lost filling or crown that is not painful, a chipped tooth, a loose denture, or an ulcer that has not healed in ten days.

The appointment fee covers examination, an X-ray if needed, and getting you out of pain. Definitive treatment is usually booked separately once the pain has settled.
While you wait
Hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse briefly in milk or saline, never scrub it. Put it back in the socket if you can and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk and get here within the hour. Do not attempt this with a baby tooth.
Ibuprofen and paracetamol taken together, at the doses on the packets, work better than either alone. Avoid very hot or very cold food. Do not put aspirin against the gum, it burns the tissue. Sleeping propped up often helps.
Ring us the same morning. Do not apply heat to the outside of the face. If the swelling is spreading towards the eye or under the jaw, or you have difficulty swallowing, go to your nearest hospital emergency department rather than waiting for us.
Keep it, we can often recement a crown. Avoid chewing on that side. Sugar-free gum pressed into the cavity is a reasonable stopgap for a sharp edge overnight.
Roll a clean handkerchief into a firm pad, place it over the socket and bite hard for twenty minutes without checking it. Repeat once. If it is still bleeding after that, ring us or the out of hours number.
Out of hours
Outside opening times, ring the main number and the answerphone gives the on-call number. One of our four clinicians is on call every night and at weekends, and covers Sunday emergencies from the practice at 10:00 and 16:00 by arrangement.
For anything involving breathing, swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or a suspected fracture, go straight to a hospital emergency department. Dental practices are not equipped for those.
