What counts as a host

ThingCounts as
Virtual machine or bare metal serverOne host
Kubernetes nodeOne host, regardless of pod count
Container or podNothing. Not billed.
Serverless functionNothing. Traces ingested free.
Managed database or queueNothing. Monitored via integration.
Host up for less than 6 hours in a monthNothing. Autoscaling is not penalised.

Billing is on the 95th percentile of hourly host count across the month, not the peak, so a single load spike does not set your bill for the month.

Worked example

A 40 host Kubernetes estate

Twelve services, roughly 900 million spans a month, 4TB of logs.

40 hosts on Team, billed annually$1,560 a month
Ingest for 900M spansIncluded
4TB of logsIncluded
Unlimited queries and dashboardsIncluded
Unlimited seatsIncluded
Total$1,560 a month

The same estate on usage-based pricing typically lands between $4,000 and $9,000 depending on how chatty the logs are, which is difficult to predict in advance. That predictability is the reason most teams move.

Billing questions

No. Invite the whole company. Charging per seat discourages exactly the people who should be looking at production data.

You are billed on the 95th percentile of hourly host count. Scale up for a launch and come back down and the spike is excluded. Sustained growth is billed pro rata from the day it started.

At renewal, yes. Mid-term we will not refund the discount already given, but we will let you leave with 30 days notice and refund unused whole months at the monthly rate.

Under 10 people and under two years old, 50% off Team for the first year. Academic and registered non-profit use is free up to 25 hosts. Email sales with something that proves it.

A button in Settings, Billing. It takes effect at the end of the current period, no phone call, no retention team. Your data stays queryable for 30 days after and is then deleted.
